LED screen LAN and power cable calculator

Pick the module and the cabinet layout. Get the number of LAN ports and cables, the power lines with their cable size and MCB, the main supply cable, and a map of how each cable runs through the cabinets.

For reference only. Still being built: there can be mistakes. This calculator is new. Power figures come from our module datasheets, and the cable and MCB sizes are our general recommendation for single-phase supply. Always have the final wiring checked by a licensed electrician. It is free, and nothing you enter is saved or sent anywhere.

How it works, step by step: how to calculate LAN ports, power lines, cable size and MCB for an LED screen.

Need the whole screen worked out, with modules, cabinets, power supplies, controller and the frame drawing? Use the screen raw material calculator: it includes this LAN and power section for the layout you choose.

LED screen LAN cable calculator and power calculator in one

This free LED screen LAN cable calculator works out the data and power wiring of an LED video wall from the module and the cabinet layout. It answers the questions installers ask before every job: how many LAN ports (Ethernet outputs) the sending card or controller needs, how many network cables and jumpers to carry, the LED screen power consumption in kW and amps, how many power lines, the power cable size in sq mm and the MCB rating. It also draws the LAN map and power map, so you can see how each cable runs through the cabinets.

Use it as an LED wall calculator for indoor and outdoor screens of any size, from a small P2.5 indoor display to a large P6 or P10 outdoor hoarding. The steps behind it are explained in our guide how to calculate LAN ports, power lines, cable size and MCB for an LED screen.

What it calculates

  • LAN / network cable calculation: pixels per cabinet, LAN ports needed, long CAT6 runs and cabinet-to-cabinet LAN jumpers.
  • LED display power calculation: peak and typical power (kW), current per cabinet and in total (A).
  • LED screen power distribution: number of power lines, cabinets per line and power jumpers, on single phase.
  • Cable sizing and MCB: cable size (sq mm) and C-curve MCB for each line, plus the main supply cable and main MCB.

Frequently asked questions

How many receiving cards and LAN cables does an LED screen need?

Usually one receiving card per cabinet, connected in a chain by LAN jumpers. The number of long LAN cables equals the number of LAN ports used on the sending card or controller, and the number of jumpers is the number of cabinets minus the number of ports. This calculator counts both for your layout.

How many cabinets can I connect on one LAN port?

It depends on the pixels. A Gigabit LAN output carries about 6.5 lakh pixels (6,55,360 px on Colorlight). Divide that by the pixels of one cabinet: for example a 960 × 960 mm P2.5 cabinet has 1,47,456 px, so up to 4 cabinets per port. We keep whole columns on each port, so the answer can be a little lower.

Should I use CAT5e or CAT6 cable for an LED screen?

Both work for Gigabit LED data. CAT6 is the safer choice for long runs and outdoor screens. Keep each run from the controller to the screen under about 100 m; for longer distances use a fibre converter.

How much power does an LED screen use per square foot?

It depends on the module. As a rough guide, indoor P2.5 screens use about 40 to 45 W per sq ft at peak and outdoor screens more. In normal use an LED screen draws about one third of its peak. The calculator uses the maximum power of the module you choose, from its datasheet.

What size wire is used for LED screen power?

Copper multi-strand cable of at least 2.5 sq mm on each power line, and 4 sq mm on screens over about 100 sq ft. The main supply cable is sized from the total current; a mid-size screen usually needs 10 sq mm. The calculator picks the size for you.

Is this LED screen calculator free?

Yes. It is a free tool from MG TechLink for LED screen builders and installers, with no sign-up. The results are for reference only: please have the final wiring checked by a qualified electrician or professional installer.
