An LED screen does not light every LED all the time. The driver ICs switch rows on and off very quickly, and the refresh rate, in hertz, is how many times per second the picture is redrawn this way. Your eyes rarely notice the difference between 1,920 Hz and 3,840 Hz, but cameras do.
Why it matters on camera
Phone cameras and video cameras capture the screen many times per second. If the screen refreshes too slowly, the recording shows dark bands, rolling lines or flicker. For screens at weddings, events, studios, churches and stages, where people film constantly, a higher refresh rate gives a clean picture on camera.
Typical values
| Refresh rate | Where you see it | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| About 1,920 Hz | Qiangli Eco series modules | Advertising and signage that is rarely filmed |
| About 3,840 Hz | Qiangli Pro series, Dahua FeuVision modules | Most indoor and outdoor screens, events |
| 6,000 – 7,680 Hz | High-end Qiangli Pro modules | Studios, broadcast, stages with heavy filming |
Refresh rate is not frame rate
Frame rate (usually 60 frames per second) is how often new video content arrives. Refresh rate is how often the LEDs are scanned to show each frame. A screen can play normal 60 fps video and still have a 3,840 Hz refresh rate.
Set it correctly
The control system has to be configured to the refresh rate given in the module's datasheet. Qiangli's datasheets note that running at the specified value also protects the LEDs' service life, so always load the official parameters for your module and receiving card.
